1. For my fourth reading, I read an article titled “Tangled in the Web.” It is a personal story of a mother and wife who fell in to the addicitons of the internet.
2. I love Edmund Burke’s quote – “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” This is so significant because of the influence that we as parents, sibling, friends, and teachers can have. In the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet, we are advised to “Have the courage to walk out of a movie or video party, turn off a computer or television, change a radio station, or put down a magazine if what is being presented does not meet Heavenly Father’s standards. Do these things even if others do not.” We need to instill that confidence and knowledge of what is right in children so they will have the courage to stay away from those things that are not uplifting and decent. As Elder M. Russell Ballard stated, “Brothers and sisters, refuse to be used. Refuse to be manipulated. Refuse to support those programs that violate traditional family values. We may be a small voice to begin with; nevertheless, let us speak out and encourage a more uplifting, inspiring, and acceptable media.”
The internet is so amazing. So much can be accomplished with it, and it can be so beneficial. On the other hand, it can create traps and have a negative impact on people’s lives. Our job is to find the positive and productive uses of it.
3. I am determined to prepare my future family with guidelines while using the internet or media, for example, simply by putting the computer in a heavy-traffic area in the house. I want to encourage my students while doing projects and assignments to appreciate the benefits of using the internet by staying on safe sights and also encouraging their parents to take precautions in their homes.
4. I have two younger siblings, which although they have been taught and know about the benefits and negative aspects of the internet and media, still can be influenced by what they see me and the rest of my family do. As Brother Graham stated in his article, “A parent who limits his or her own computer, cell phone, and TV time to make time to build relationships is setting an example that will counter current technology trends.” By being a good example and encouraging my friends and family to engage in things that uplift, I can prevent them from the evil influences the internet can create.
