Class Reflection

In some of the articles we read and discussed, I learned that development and learning directly affect the way the brain is wired. Kids' brains now days are wired differently than their parents' were whey they were young, mostly due to the advances in technology we currently have. Technology in the classroom can be beneficial because it aids in language and literacy development, which is so crucial for children. It also provides a scaffolding and tools to enhance learning. First of all, technology/computer programs can help young learners through experiential learning and collaboration. Computers can give a lot of opportunities for social interaction. There is also intrinsic motivation there - kids absolutely love computers. They love exploring and trying new things, especially when things are not so task-focused.
It was fun to have an 8 year old teach us how to use the 'plasic/$100' computers they are also giving to kids in poorer countries. They are great little machines and I can see how kids would love to explore around with them and use them while learning.
We also talked about digital cameras in teh classroom, and the benefits and uses of them. My group did a little project that went along with the 1st grade standard and objective of eating healthy foods. We used the digital camera to take pictures of examples of foods that are healthy, verses foods that are not. Thanks to our helper, Daniel! (As a note, it is also important to have the students plan out what pictures they are going to take).
